Photojournalism: The Art of Story Telling Workshop with Andy Dunaway, Stacy Pearsall and Alice Keeney

Students will learn to tell a story with less than 10 photographs. This 3-day photojournalism workshop will advance your technical skills and introduce innovative tools to enhance your expertise. You will be given an initial review of your existing work, which will be used as a platform for the duration of the workshop. Story assignments will be given based on the initial review and each students story-telling ability. These assignments will force students out of thier comfort zone and into true photojournalism mode. By the workshop’s last day, students will be confident in thier ability to choose good story subjects and document uncontrolled action.

DAY 1
Students are requested to bring 10 images from their portfolio on the first day for an initial review and evaluation. The images must be submitted on a compact disc or thumb drive. The review will help the instructors pair each student with the right story assignment and will also give the instructors the opportunity to convey shooting tips and guidance for the student's assignments.

Each instructor will give a brief presentation of his or her interpretation of photojournalism. Together, the instructors will explain how photojournalism may be applied in everyday photography. Once the foundation is laid, each instructor will break off with their 5 students and give out assignments. The assignments are meant to challenge each student to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. However, the instructors will be there to guide the students through every step of the photojournalism process.

Students will be given a fact sheet, which outlines the story topic, location and point of contact. From there, it is each students' responsibility to establish communication and start their stories.

Students will shoot until 4:00 p.m. and then meet back at CCforP. Instructors will talk with each student about their story angle and offer suggestions and advice. At 4:30 p.m., students will be released to download and make selects at home or in their hotel rooms.

DAY 2
At 9:30 a.m., students will meet with their instructors for an initial story review. From there, they will be released to start their full day of documentation. If students have any particular issues, they may call their instructors for advice or guidance. Instructors are also available to meet their students on location for hands-on help as well.

DAY 3
At 9:30 a.m., students will meet with their instructors for an image review from the previous day of shooting. After receiving story direction, they will be released to finish any final photo details they may need to complete their story.

Students will get lunch on their own and will return to CCforP by 1:00 p.m. At that time, students will download their final images. Each student will receive a final edit by his or her respective editors. Up to 10 images will be selected for the final viewing, which will start at CCforP at approximately 4:00 p.m.

The final stories will be displayed in an online gallery at www.ccforp.org.

PRIVATE PORTFOLIO REVIEWS:

A review of each student’s full portfolio will be given upon request by the student. A sign up sheet will be passed around and each student may designate an instructor and time for a private review. If a student would like one-on-one reviews, images must in one folder and ready for viewing. A website or blog with a collection of images is also acceptable.
